In Year 1 we use the ‘Get Set’ approach to learning. This enables children to have a smooth transition from EYFS in to Year 1. It involves short whole class teaching and then children work in small groups with an adult to complete maths/writing and foundation subject tasks whilst the rest of the class are accessing continuous provision. The balance of adult led learning and child initiated learning allows children to continue their journey of learning through play where provision areas have been enhanced to reflect the learning for that week, whilst also having adult led learning with a clear focus and objective to meet the needs of the children.
We follow Read Write Inc for phonics where children are given daily phonics sessions that are tailored to meet the child’s needs which supports both reading and writing. We also use Talk Through Stories which allows to children to become immersed in a range of stories where we look closely at the characters and the meaning behind a story as well as discussing vocabulary and how we can use it in our talk. Talk Through Stories gives children a love of reading which is so important to enable our learners.
