Welcome to the Year 5 Learning Page! Here, you’ll find all the exciting things happening in our class, as we explore new topics and work together to grow as learners. A day in our class consists of maths, reading, writing and one afternoon subject. On an afternoon, we teach one subject per week.
We believe that every child is capable of success. In Year 5, we work hard to:
• Be curious and ask questions
• Take pride in our learning
• Support one another
• Think critically and solve problems creatively
• Always try our best!
In Year 5 maths, children use concrete, pictorial and abstract methods to build a deep understanding of key mathematical concepts:
· Concrete: Hands-on tools like counters, blocks, or number lines help children physically manipulate and explore numbers, shapes and measurements.
· Pictorial: Visual representations, such as drawings, diagrams, or charts, help children make connections between concrete objects and abstract ideas.
· Abstract: Mathematical symbols and notation are used for more advanced reasoning and problem-solving, allowing children to work with numbers and operations on a deeper level.
These methods are applied across areas such as number, geometry and measure and statistics to strengthen understanding and skills.
In Year 5, students are expected to engage with a range of texts to help develop their writing skills. The goal is to apply Year 5 grammatical features effectively in both creative and informative writing.
In Year 5 reading, children will explore both fiction and non-fiction texts to develop and apply key reading skills. These include:
· Retrieval: Finding and extracting specific information from the text.
· Vocabulary: Understanding the meaning of words in context and expanding their word bank.
· Inference: Reading between the lines to understand implied meanings and emotions.
· Explain: Describing and clarifying ideas, events, or characters from the text.
· Summarise: Condensing the main points or events of the text into a shorter version.
· Prediction: Making educated guesses about what might happen next based on clues in the text.
These skills help children engage deeply with texts, understand them better and respond thoughtfully to different types of writing.
Our PE day is Monday, on this day children will attend school in their PE clothes.
Homework and spellings are given out every Friday and are to be returned into school by the following Thursday.
Please see below our curriculum overview and timetable to see what your child will be learning throughout the year.
